© James Goldsmith This is Ben, a hedgehog, that when brought into the Hedgehog Rescue unit last Autumn, just did not grow. He has now grown to be full sized and is living happily in a private garden.	© James Goldsmith This is Matilda she has been bitten by a Jack Russell. Although severely injured she is begining to make good progress.

© James Goldsmith this is oska he was found on someones lawn and was brought into the hedgehog rescue unit waying just 58g. he was estemated to be just 10 days old and at the time could not hear or see.	© James Goldsmith this is oska 2 weeks later he now ways 200g and is doing very well it will now only be a few months and he should be realeaseed back into the wild.

5 things to take care with when in your garden every year

1. Always check ground before using a trimmer, as they cause terrible Injuries.
2. Never use slug pellets, it will poison everything that eats the slug.
3. Take care when digging compost heaps.
4. Check carefully under bonfires
5. If you see a hedgehog during the day something is always wrong.

There are many ways that you can help hedgehogs in your garden from feeding them to giving them a home for the winter. I hope that this web site will encourage you to help them in your own garden and cherish them as a gardeners friend.

It's nice for children and adults to think that there is a hedgehog in the garden and that they might just get a look at it if they are at the right place at the right time.
Have a listen too, Hedgehogs are very!! noisy eaters!
Food
You can go out and buy from a good pet store proper hedgehog food but this can be very expensive unless you shop around for a good price. The cheaper alterative is cat or dog food ,you can also give them a bowl of water.
Why not be really garden friendly and find them a bowl of slugs!!
Remember, if you poison your slugs, you are poisoning any wildlife which eats the slug.

Collecting your old stamps
This is a good and very easy way that you can help
Hedgehog Rescue raise the money that they need to care for the hedgehogs.

How to go about it

Tear the stamps off your envelopes carefully, leaving a gap around the edge. Ensure that the stamps are intact.

Once you have got a large amount of stamps put them in a stamped addressed envelope addressed to;

Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus)
The hedgehog can also be called an urchin.

Size
An adult male weighs 800-1110g (28-40oz) (10in, 26cm) females are generally smaller and weigh 500-700g (17-25oz)
Colour
Hedgehogs are brown (rarely albino) with spines over their back and sides. The spines are dark brown with lighter tips. The head and belly are covered with coarse brown hair.
Breeding season
Hedgehog young can be born between May-July, late litters can be born up to September.
Gestation period
The hedgehog has a Gestation period of 31-35 days.
Number of young
Hedgehogs give birth to 2-7 young although 20% will die before leaving the nest.
Lifespan
Hedgehogs have an average lifespan of about two years but can live for up to 8 years if conditions and food supply's are good.
Food
Hedgehogs food consists of worms, caterpillars. beetles, carrion and almost anything available at ground level.
Predators
The hedgehog has few predators. Foxes, badgers and a dog may take some, especially babies but the tawny owl, pine martin, polecat, gamekeepers, motorists and people with trimmers are the main killers.
