Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus)
The hedgehog can also be called an urchin.



Size
An adult male weighs 800-1110g (28-40oz) (10in, 26cm) females are generally smaller and weigh 500-700g (17-25oz)
Colour
Hedgehogs are brown (rarely albino) with spines over their back and sides. The spines are dark brown with lighter tips. The head and belly are covered with coarse brown hair.
Breeding season
Hedgehog young can be born between May-July, late litters can be born up to September.
Gestation period
The hedgehog has a Gestation period of 31-35 days.
Number of young
Hedgehogs give birth to 2-7 young although 20% will die before leaving the nest.
Lifespan
Hedgehogs have an average lifespan of about two years but can live for up to 8 years if conditions and food supply's are good.
Food
Hedgehogs food consists of worms, caterpillars. beetles, carrion and almost anything available at ground level.
Predators
The hedgehog has few predators. Foxes, badgers and a dog may take some, especially babies but the tawny owl, pine martin, polecat, gamekeepers, motorists and people with trimmers are the main killers.
